HOW
TO USE YOUR
EASY TAPPER MODEL #XTC-1.5Z
TAPPING MACHINE
1. Verify the
source, destination, type, contents, and pressure of the line you
are about to tap. Note: Maximum tapping pressure for the Model #XTC
1.5Z is 1470 P.S.I.G. at 100 degrees F.
2. A Tapping
saddle of proper size can then be tightened on to the main line.
(In some cases a thread-o-let or malleable iron nipple can be arc
welded to the main line).
3. A short nipple
is then threaded into the tapping saddle.
4. A "full
port" ball valve is then threaded onto the short nipple. Note:
Gate valves are not recommended in this case, because shavings from
the drilling process tend to collect in the gate chamber, preventing
the gate from closing all the way.
5. The XTC 1.5Z
Hot Tapping Machine ships ready to use, strips of pure graphite
will need to be installed in the packaging box, and grease is factory
installed in the bearing box. Packing is installed as needed. Additional
packing can be added at any time (even during the tapping process,
simply by withdrawing the drive shaft and cutter back out of the
branch line valve and then closing the branch line valve while packing
is installed). Loosen the packing box cylinder bolts on the outside
of the machine. Slide cylinder back past the two external holes
through machine body (one on each side of machine). Add 1 strip
of pre-cut packing, then slide forward by moving the packing cylinder
into forward position, loosen again and add a second strip of packing
through hole on opposite side of machine. Now the cylinder can be
tightened in place
6. Now select
the proper cutter and install the hexagon arbor of the cutter into
the hexagon receiver end of the drive shaft. Note: the proper cutter
size will generally be 1/8 smaller than the "full port"
size of the branch line ball valve you are tapping through. The
pilot bit can now be installed in the arbor to lead the cutter.
The end of the pilot bit should be positioned to penetrate the wall
thickness of the main line before the cutter engages the wall of
the main line. The cutter and the pilot should now be tightened
securely to the drive shaft.

Use a 1/4"
Cobalt Pilot Bit.
Position within the Bimetal Hole Saw to
extend completely through the wall of the pipe before the
teeth of the hole saw contact the wall of the pipe.
As the Cobalt
Pilot Bit penetrates the wall of the main line, fluid will
rush into the tapping machine body and will act as a coolant
for the Bimetal Hole Saw.
