HOW TO USE YOUR
“EASY TAPPER”™ MODEL #XTC-1.9Z-HD
HIGH PRESSURE TAPPING MACHINE

1. Verify the source, destination, type, contents, and pressure of the line you are about to tap. Note: Maximum tapping pressure for the Model #XTC 1.9Z-HD is 5000 P.S.I.G. at 100 degrees F.

2. A proper outlet will need to be attached to the main line. In most cases a thread-o-let, flange-o-let, or iron nipple can be welded to the main line.

3. A short nipple may be attached to the outlet for valve connection.

4. A "full port" ball valve is then connected to the short nipple. Note: Gate valves are not recommended in this case, because shavings from the drilling process tend to collect in the gate chamber, preventing the gate from closing all the way.

5. Before the first use of the XTC 1.9Z-HD Hot Tapping Machine, 2 strips of pure carbon will need to be installed in the packaging box. The packing box should be used as the 2nd, or back-up source for sealing the machine against escaping fluids. The first seal is accessed while the machine is disconnected from the valve connection. To inspect or replace the machine front seal, set machine body in bench vise. Rotate spindle to advance drive shaft coupler forward out of machine body, exposing coupler mounting bolts. Loosen bolts and remove coupler. Loosen and remove the two bolts over the front seal plate. Removing the plate will expose the front seal. Inspect and replace if needed. Reassemble and the machine will be ready for attachment to the branch line valve connection. Grease has been factory installed in the bearing box. During normal operation, the two external packing box bolts should be tightened to only about 5 inch pounds, as this is the back up packing box and is used only if the front machine seal fails, allowing fluids to leak back into the machine body. In this case the bolts are tightened as needed to seal the machine against leaking fluid. As stated earlier this is the back-up seal section of the machine. Using both seal sections at the same time will create excessive friction on the drive shaft. Additional carbon packing may be added at any time (even during the tapping process, simply by withdrawing the drive shaft and cutter back out of the branch line valve and then closing the branch line valve while packing is installed). Loosen the packing box cylinder bolts on the outside of the machine. Slide cylinder back past the two external holes through machine body (one on each side of machine). Add 1 strip of pre-cut packing, then slide forward.

Stainless Steel Tapping Procedures

Use a 1/4" Cobalt Pilot Bit.
Position within the Bimetal Hole Saw to
extend completely through the wall of the pipe before the teeth of the hole saw contact the wall of the pipe.

As the Cobalt Pilot Bit penetrates the wall of the main line, fluid will rush into the tapping machine body and will act as a coolant for the Bimetal Hole Saw.
